Lightning Ridge Miners Association

The Lightning Ridge Miners’ Association (LRMA) is the peak body representing opal miners, wholesalers, and retailers in Lightning Ridge, New South Wales—the world capital of black opal.

Established in 1966 by miners for miners and incorporated in 1974, the non-profit organisation advocates strongly for the industry. With around 1,000 members, it lobbies government on mining regulations, safety, land access, and policy reforms to protect small-scale opal mining.

The LRMA serves as the voice of the black opal community, negotiating with authorities, providing member support, and helping sustain this unique Australian industry for future generations.
