Amigo's Castle

About the Experience

Amigos Castle is a heritage-listed stone castle, hand-built over more than 40 years by Italian-Australian opal miner Amigo using local ironstone boulders. Amigo created winding tunnels, courtyards, towers, and intricate stonework that brings the castle to life.
Visitors can explore the art gallery, underground stairways, rustic workshop, lookout points and unique rockwork. The grounds are filled with historic mining relics, lanterns, bush-kitchen pieces, vintage tools, quirky sculptures and outback memorabilia.
This is a relaxing and authentic Lightning Ridge experience where families can wander, fossick, spike, take photos and enjoy the history of the opal fields.
History and Stories
Amigo began building the castle using determination, recycled materials and hand tools. Early photos show his wheelbarrow, cement mixer and the first carved stone tower taking shape. The castle grew over decades, inspired by European stonework, local geology and Amigo’s vision.
