Bragging rights

At some time late November/early December our temperatures suddenly soar from the mid 30’s to high 40’s, and then increase throughout January and February – which can be brutal with temps into the 50’s. 

So if you like it hot – then head our way and enjoy cooling off in the 40 degree bore baths when the air temp around you can be ten or more degrees hotter!

Most mining ceases because of the inability to cool surface machinery, and out on the fields it can be up to 60 degrees with the air almost unbreathable.

Many locals also choose to scale back and take a break so please check with the Visitors Information Centre beforehand, as most tours and some shops do close for summer.

However if you’re after the ‘bragging rights’ experience of surviving our brutal outback in summer – all our motels are air conditioned especially the Wallangulla Motel, the Lightning Ridge Bowling Club, Down to Earth Opals and Lost Sea Opals are also fully air conditioned.

Check to see which mine tours might be operating (usually scaled back hours) as once you’re down below, it’s a pleasant and constant 20 – 24 degrees.

Fun fact – summer seems to bring Europeans (especially from Germany) to Lightning Ridge in increased numbers, and their presence is quite noticeable. Must be pretty cold back home!
